For the Personal Touch
Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse of Southern Africa, a young, bustling city part first world, part third world. One does not
associate this densely populated city with wildlife - but it is here, and not only at night!
Just outside the city is the Rhino and Lion park. This small nature reserve houses a large selection of free-roaming antelope, zebra
and rhino. Take a slow drive through the park viewing the animals, and drive through the sections housing lion, cheetah and African wild
dog. The last two species are highly endangered.
The visitor centre offers a zoo-type experience. There are many exotic species in the zoo section, including tiger and panther. Some of
the large bird species found in Souther Aftica, such as Marabou stork and Blue and Crowned crane are also on view. On the way out,
we walk across to Hippo Pools, where there are hippo and ground hornbill as well as more lion. A picnic site offers the opportunity of a
picnic lunch out in the open, with the beautiful hills and scenery of the Cradle of Humankind stretching into the distance.
The history of the area and Johannesburg in general is discussed on the way. One of the first gold mines in the Johannesburg area is
close by, and the Wonder Cave, which is in the reserve, can be visited.
This tour offers variety, and can be amended to cater to specific interests. It can be taken as a half-day tour, or as a full day. Drinks and
snacks are provided in the vehicle, and a picnic lunch can be included. This is an ideal tour to combine with Cradle of Humankind
sites such as Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng - ask for a quote.
